In the future, when we sit on one of his chairs or use one of the buses he designed for the city of Hanover during the EXPO 2000 world’s fair, we will realise that they are part of an oeuvre that has now come to a close far too soon. And next time we visit Bar Basso in Milan – which owes its hip status during the Milan Furniture Fair to the fact that James Irvine used to meet his friends here, not far from his studio – we will be thinking of him. He will be sorely missed.
