Cover Story: Design for children

We approach our youngest “target group”: Our columnist Claus Richter visited the traditional businesses Manufactum and Imaginarium and walked the isles of the American super seller Toys“R“Us. He found mountains of colorful dolls, some motorized or speaking, construction kits and stuffed animals. A playful design critique came to be. Franziska Beyer searched for fascinating playground concepts in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Great Britain and North America. Every Nation has its own expectations towards and standards for playgrounds – hence the diversity of designs. And even more so since there is no such thing as an education for a playground designer anywhere in Europe. The German designer Günter Beltzig – who in the last 40 years developed more than 500 playgrounds worldwide – explains the current situation in an interview. Thomas Lupo called our attention to his bachelor’s thesis “Pra Fora / Outward” while giving a lecture at Typo Berlin. The 30-year-old graphic designer moved to the favela Morro do Papagaio in Brazil for five months to offer the children there creative projects. Barbara Schär spoke with the Stuttgart-based Designer about his soon to be published book on the experiences he collected there.
