A Line of Type

A film about the complex, fantastic typesetting machine, called Linotype, that Thomas Edison hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. This machine, which was invented in the USA by the German émigré and watchmaker Ottmar Mergenthaler, revolutionised printing and, one could say, western society along with it. The director and producer Douglas Wilson, who also studied graphic design, tells the story of the Linotype and introduces us to individuals, past and present, who have worked with it. AN
